Sangha night

The Tibetan wheel of life

Community pictures

Come along next week for Sangha Night, an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the Dharma, how it relates to our own lives, and practice together.

Almost anything can happen on Sangha Night, but mostly we meditate together, have a 20-30 minute presentation from someone in the community, and then have 20 minutes for small group discussion on the evening's theme.

The Tibetan wheel of life.
The wheel of life is a Buddhist symbol on the perspective of the human situation, the process of reactive conditionality. It is a combined map and users manual to samsara. Adbhutaja is introducing The six Realms: states of mind. The realms are divided into "higher" (more fortunate) and "lower" (more suffering) states: The Higher Realms: God Realm (Deva): A state of bliss, pride, and aesthetic pleasure. The danger is complacency; beings are so comfortable they forget to practice the Dharma. Asura Realm (Jealous Gods): Driven by competition, envy, and the urge to be "on top." It is a state of constant conflict and paranoia. Human Realm: Characterized by a balance of pleasure and pain. It is the most fortunate realm because it offers the curiosity and need required for spiritual growth. The Lower Realms: Animal Realm: Defined by instinct and the pursuit of basic survival (food, sleep, sex). It is a state of ignorance and lack of self-awareness.Hungry Ghost Realm (Preta): Represented by beings with huge bellies and tiny necks. It symbolizes insatiable craving, addiction, and inner emptiness.Hell Realm (Naraka): A state of intense suffering, often triggered by anger and hatred. It feels like a claustrophobic trap of physical or emotional pain.

Sangha nights are a place for people to come together and celebrate community, deepen their knowledge of Buddhism, and their understanding of how to practice it. They are designed for those who have been coming to the centre for a little while. If you have had minimal contact with us, you are best to attend our Intro course first, even if you have practised within other traditions.
