Sangha night

Vision and Transformation

Community pictures

Tonight we are looking at the "Livelihood" aspect of the path of Vision and Transformation, otherwise and more traditionally known as the Noble Eightfold path, an early and fundamental teaching of the Buddha.

Why is livelihood so important? Well, so far in the series we have been concerned with the transformation of our separate, individual selves. With this step, Perfect Livelihood, we are concerned with the transformation of collective life - in human terms the life of society. In Buddhism there is an image of an ideal society, as well as an ideal individual.

Perfect Livelihood is about how we relate to our society, and our world, in economic terms. It's not about how much we can earn, but how we can meet our economic needs in a caring and positive way, without negatively impacting other people, other sentient beings, and the environment in general. And by working ethically, we not only benefit others, but ourselves as well.

Join us this evening as Beck joins the discussion on this important topic, and reveals that it's not only what we do in our vocation that is important to consider, but also how we use the income we get from it.

Please note an experimental rearrangement of Sangha night structure - we will be meditating first at 7pm for about half an hour. If you arrive late, don't worry, please just slip in as quietly as you can. We will probably be in the warmth of the room at the top of the stairs.

Wednesday nights are a place for people who have attended our foundation courses to come together and celebrate community, deepen their knowledge of Buddhism, and their understanding of how to practice it.
