Men’s Study Morning

Transcending the Human Predicament: The Parable of the Burning House

Ox and cart

The Buddhist visionary scripture, The White Lotus Sutra, has the Buddha teaching the Parable of the Burning House. Children are enticed out of the danger of a burning house by the offer of various vehicles or carts. In the Sutra the children are offered different models for striving towards human enlightenment: the Arhat ideal, the ideal of private Enlightenment, and the Bodhisattva ideal. These models correspond to underlying trends in the spiritual life of each individual but also trends within any Buddhist sangha or practice community: working within the institutions of the sangha, solitary meditation, and how we apply our practice to the basic business of human survival and relating to other people and the culture we are part of. Do we have definite preferences as to how we see ourselves getting out of ‘our’ burning house? Are there limitations with our preferences? Do we really have such choices?

The study event is open to any men involved with Triratna Buddhist Centres.

It is suggested that you attend the 9 am open meditation at the ABC to start the morning but this is optional. We ask that you bring a light lunch to to share. Light lunch so we are not all falling asleep in the afternoon!.
