This class is the place for newcomers to the Auckland Buddhist Centre to learn meditation and the basics of Buddhism.
TONIGHT: Engaging your Imagination and Heart
Believe it or not, everyone worships something. Maybe it's coffee, or productivity, or your computer. What do we worship in Buddhism? What is the role of ritual and devotion? What sparks our imagination, moves us emotionally and connects us to what is of central importance in our lives?
Many people believe that Buddhism is a philosophy, psychology or Way of Life rather than a religion. And when they think of religion, they usually think of theism (single God based) and blind faith. Buddhism applies neither of those. Still, Buddhism seems to place importance on ritual, devotion, engaging the heart, and the power of the imagination. How does this fit with our own personal experience? What does ritual and devotion offer us that a purely intellectual understanding might not? We always ask that people come with an open mind and heart.
This class happens every Tuesday night at 7pm, even on public holidays. It's a rolling 11-week introductory programme. You can join on any Tuesday night. Classes are designed as much as possible to stand alone for this purpose. But committing to all 11 nights over time will give you the thorough foundation you need to establish your own meditation practice, and step confidently into other classes and retreats.
