Intro to meditation and Buddhism

Understanding and practising the Buddhist path

Group of friends at the Auckland Buddhist Centre (ABC)

This class is the place for newcomers to the Auckland Buddhist Centre to learn our two core meditation practices, and the fundamentals of Buddhism as we practice it within our tradition.

Start any Monday night. No bookings needed.

This course consists of 11 classes, which we repeat in sequence throughout the year. This means you can start any Monday and you'll eventually cover all 11 themes and both meditation practices.

This class should give you sufficient foundation in the system of practice within our community to join other classes and retreats at the centre with greater confidence and a shared understanding and language (every tradition differs slightly in method and language).

What will you learn?

  • two key meditation practices: the mindfulness of breathing and metta bhavana (cultivation of loving-kindness)
  • what karma is and isn't
  • Buddhist ethics
  • what positive emotion means and how we start to develop it
  • mindfulness within the Buddhist context
  • the nature of Reality: conditioned co-production, impermanence, and related teachings
  • how we get stuck in unhelpful patterns and habits, and how to break free
  • a bit about the historical Buddha, how Buddhism came about, where our tradition fits in the Buddhist world and what Enlightenment is
