Sangha night

"Awareness is Revolutionary" series - Awareness of purpose

Community pictures

As we continue our exploration of awareness, this evening we look as how we see ourselves as an ongoing entity through time. Or more particularly, our "continuity of purpose". Sampajanna is a Pali term that literally refers to the mental processes by which we monitor ourselves as an experiencer of sensations (including mental sensations). But it has also come to mean how we experience a sense of purpose in our lives.

Despite the no-self doctrine that Buddhism is famous for, sampajanna is a sense of "self" that Buddhism does allow for. It allows us to make plans, it allows us to learn, it allows us to develop spiritually, and in a way, if we didn't have it, we wouldn't be able to be aware in any deep sense at all.

Tonight we are fortunate in having Justine share with us her reflections on the importance of this faculty, and what it means for us to be able to have a view of our goals, successes, failures and progress as we navigate our lives through the challenges and opportunities that present themselves.

So join us this evening for meditation, tea, talk and discussion on this potentially unique human attribute and it's benefits.

Wednesday nights are a place for people to come together and celebrate community, deepen their knowledge of Buddhism, and their understanding of how to practice it. They are designed for those who have been coming to the centre for a little while. If you have had minimal contact with us, you are best to attend our Intro courses on Tuesday evenings first.
