Sangha night

With open-handed generosity

Community pictures

We continue tonight our series on dana (generosity). Generosity is an important practice in Buddhism, being the second of five ethical precepts (or training principles) that as Buddhists we try to keep in mind, and also the first practice or perfection of a Bodhisattva.

We welcome Jay this evening who will speak to us on the generosity of giving time and energy to others, and also a type of generosity peculiar to the Bodhisattva path - the generosity of giving merits to others. This is the epitome of the selfless act. That is, not doing something because it will benefit yourself, whether it be simply being well thought of, or because it will add to your tally of merits to take you one step closer to Nirvana. Instead, given a certain situation, you will spontaneously act for the benefit of others. This is effectively what the "Transference of Merits" you may have heard recited is about.

So join us tonight for community connection, and to listen, discuss and reflect on the practice of selfless giving of time and energy to others.

Wednesday nights are a place for people who have attended our foundation courses to come together and celebrate community, deepen their knowledge of Buddhism, and their understanding of how to practice it. They generally include a talk and discussion, a social cup of tea and meditation.
