Buddhist Action Month (BAM)

Lion roaring

'Lion’s roar – speaking up in a troubled world'

In Buddhism the Bodhisattva ideal exists, where Buddhists dedicate their lives to the alleviation of suffering of all, and tirelessly dedicate themselves to this task.

In this spirit Buddhist Action Month (BAM) was born. Buddhists commit to taking action in areas of concern, usually around the degradation of the environment or issues around poverty and other social concerns.

Most of us have intentions to act with care for the environment and a desire to help those less fortunate. However, many things seem to get in the way of translating this intention into action. For some, feelings of scarcity and lack shrink their perception of the resources they have available to offer. Others are overwhelmed by a sense of hopelessness or dissuaded by feelings of hypocrisy from giving their resources to a cause.

This year’s theme is “Lion’s roar – speaking up in a troubled world.” We will look at speech as a vehicle for transforming our relationships with each other and the physical world we inhabit.

Over the month of June, we will cover the following themes:

  • using the principles of non-violent communication to speak from a place of truth and respect for the needs of self and other
  • activism and the environment – speaking up about environmental concerns
  • inclusivity and diversity – speaking to the need for everyone to have a place and that place be shared and respect by others

30 June
Vajrasarasi will bring BAM to a close with reflections on ‘speaking up in a troubled world’. She will share her own experience and also provide the opportunity for us to reflect on what resonated with us, what touched our hearts and what we will do as a result of the challenge laid at our door.

Wednesday nights are a place for people who have attended our foundation courses to come together and celebrate community as well as an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the Buddha's teaching.
