Learning more about Buddhism

a weekend opportunity discussing practical reflections

Bhante's teachers

With the new centre, new year, and new neighbors we are exploring different ways of helping people to better understand Buddhism. For a while, we have been talking about the opportunity of more Saturday classes and it now seems like a good time to see how that works for people.

This series is open to everyone (you can choose to join us on any Saturday in the series) and will introduce you to the intentions and teachings behind the Morning Puja that we chant at most Saturday morning meditations.

Learning the meaning behind these words introduces us to the practice of reflection and the four reflections that Buddhism says are powerful motivations for starting to change our lives. In addition, we will be talking about the quality of emotion that Buddhism teaches is so essential as a foundation to everyone's spiritual practice.

Last session: Sunyata: What does it mean and why should we care? After spending three weeks getting a better understanding of the words in the Morning Puja, which we chant most (if not every) Saturday morning before the meditation at the centre, we've decided to explore the teaching and experience of sunyata. Unlike concepts from many other religions, this historically unique teaching of Buddhism is something you are taught but then encouraged to experience for yourself. Your relation to this teaching is not one that remains mediated by others. No one stands eternally 'between' you and this realization. Further more, it is not pointing us to something that 'we' experience, but an experience which not 'ours', not 'not ours', neither 'ours' nor 'not ours' and both 'ours' and 'not ours'. Eek. I know, right.

These 11am Saturday teaching sessions will be offered as short series throughout the year rather than being offered every Saturday. Everyone is welcome, you can start coming at any point in the series, but you will get the most out of the experience by attending all the sessions. Although you don't need to attend the 10am meditation first, it is recommended that you do.
