In Buddhist thought, the six realms are different places where we can be reborn. However, they can also be viewed as psychological states we experience in our life here and now in our human form. Whether literal or figurative, if we want freedom, we have to work with these realms skilfully to escape the wheel of life. Over the next 3 weeks, we will spend time exploring what each realm represents in Buddhist thought. We will look at how to work with the challenges that each realm presents, and explore what the Buddha offers to guide us out of them. By bringing awareness to our tendencies, we’ll learn to identify which realm we are in or frequently occupy. We’ll introduce some practices associated with moving through these realms and there will be an opportunity to practice with other people.

Hell and Human Realm with Malcolm Dow

The hell realm is the place of all your worst nightmares. It’s a place of huge suffering, extreme mental distress, anxiety and depression. Kept going by our repetitive thoughts of hatred and delusion, we are stuck in a rut, spiraling further downward. With such high suicide rates in the Western world, the hell realm is a place many people find themselves in. However, within this realm there is also the real hope of significant spiritual growth. Fueled by a desire to escape suffering, people in the hell realm are not complacent about committing themselves to the spiritual life.

The human realm is the place you want to be: in this realm you have the chance to make meaningful growth and make changes, ultimately escaping the wheel of life all together. We must work hard to inhabit this realm, otherwise we spend our days moving in and out of the other realms. In this realm, we can develop our capacity for self reflection and become fully integrated.
