Boredom is a very common experience in meditation (and life!). Often we would rather be doing anything else rather than sitting on a cushion bringing our energies together on a single point of concentration. Instead, we plan our holidays, we think about dinner, we remember a good movie we saw recently, keeping our mind entertained with a string of exciting sensory experiences.
This is the hindrance of "craving sensory experience" and it arises in meditation when we are trying to limit our sensory experience so we can tame our minds. Used to constant stimulation, the mind seeks exciting experiences within the meditation experience. If we can work through this tendency we uncover a mind that is still and spacious. This leads to freedom and contentment.
Tonight Robert will talk about how this challenge shows up in his meditation and how he has worked with it. There will be an opportunity for small group discussion and reflection.
This is part of our current series on 5 classic hindrances to practice.
Wednesday nights are a place for people who have attended our foundation courses to come together and celebrate community as well as an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the Buddha's teaching, and their understanding of how to practice it.
