TONIGHT: Introduction to the Five Precepts

One way to think of the Five Precepts precepts is that they are “rules for grown ups.” We follow them because we realise it’s in everyone's best interests to do so, and not because there is anyone standing over us with a stick making us behave. This is at the heart of the Buddhist precepts – they are ethical guidelines which we adopt in order to enhance our sense of connection. If we fail to uphold them, we can immediately sense the pain of disconnection and disharmony – within ourselves, with others, and the world around us.

In this series of talks we will be looking at

  • what the 5 precepts are in their positive and negative forms
  • the difference between a precept and a command
  • how following the precepts changes our lives and makes us happier

Tonight, Robert will introduce the series, and give an overview of the Five Precepts and their importance in Buddhist life.

Wednesday nights are a place for people who have attended our foundation courses to come together and celebrate community as well as an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the Buddha's teaching, and their understanding of how to practice it.
