TONIGHT: The Second Precept - Generosity
I undertake to abstain from taking the not-given. / With open handed generosity, I purify my body.
The concept of “taking the not-given” in Buddhism is so much more broad than a legal or moral injunction against stealing. It looks at all the ways in which we may help ourselves to things that are not freely given - ranging from off loading our problems on a friend who doesn’t want to hear them through to stealing toilet paper from the office.
Instead we are encouraged to focus on what we can give, rather than on what we can get. Generosity is at the heart of the spiritual life and people who are generous enjoy happier, healthier lives.
Cittamuni will explore these concepts tonight and share examples from his own life.
Wednesday nights are a place for people who have attended our foundation courses to come together and celebrate community as well as an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the Buddha's teaching, and their understanding of how to practice it.
