Sangha night

Sangharakshita revealed

Who was Sangharakshita, and how is his legacy felt today?
Sangharakshita, who died in 2018 after a over seventy years of developing and sharing a deep and relevant understanding of Buddhist thought, was the founder of the Triratna movement of which the Auckland Buddhist Centre is a part. Much has been said and written about him, including praise for his work in making the Buddha Dharma available to many in the west, but there has also been some criticism of how he went about it.

Known colloquially but reverentially to his followers as Bhante (teacher), Sangharakshita's life was certainly unique, his focus astounding, his knowledge of the Dharma rare, and his vision clearly effective - as can be seen in the movement he created.

But being human, he was not necessarily immune to actions some might class as unskilful, especially seen out of the context of the time and generational expectations.

This evening Vajrasarasi explores her connection with Bhante, how her views have changed over time especially as more was revealed about his life, and how she sees him now, particularly in relation to her Buddhist practice.

Wednesday nights are a place for people who have attended our foundation courses to come together and celebrate community, deepen their knowledge of Buddhism, and their understanding of how to practice it. They generally include a talk and discussion, a social cup of tea and meditation.
