Introduction to Buddhism

Mind Reactive, Mind Creative

Maitreya Buddha

Watch yourself during your day. There are times when we will be on autopilot doing activities without really experiencing them ... like eating quickly without really tasting the food ... let alone allowing ourselves to enjoy it. In addition, there will be times when we are really alive to life, awake to the beauty of things, inspired by the situations around us. At these times, we feel many things which we'd like more of. These two situations, which could be talked about as mind reactive and mind creative, are worth exploring in our lives. What do they feel like? Can we cultivate a creative mind? Can we take energy away from reactivity? Is it worth the effort? How would it change our lives?

We'll be exploring these questions through the Buddhist symbol of The Wheel of Life. It is a symbol which speaks of bondage to thoughts, views, and emotions. It is also a symbol which speaks of freedom, spontaneous energy, and the rich experiences of an open heart. How can we understand this symbol in our contemporary lives? Come and explore it.
