E-waste: Tech Swap and Recycling

Buddhist Action Month initiative

e-waste

The image on your right is of trashed mobile phones!

As part of Buddhist Action Month (BAM), Muditanandi and Ratnavyuha will be helping the sangha find new homes for, responsibly recycle, and ethically dispose of their old technology.

STEP ONE: TECH SWAP at the Auckland Buddhist Centre.
On Saturday 11th June from 11 am to 4pm bring in your:

  • old mobile phones
  • laptops, monitors, desktop computers you no longer use and don't need
  • old DVD and VCR players
  • cables, routers, modems, printers ...

Also, if you need something ... come see what others are moving on to new homes. Be great to re-use within the sangha!

We need to collect money for some items (particularly old TVs) due to charges from ABILITIES NZ to recycle these items responsibly. Click on this link for these charges. All money collected at the ABC will be passed on to ABILITIES NZ for use in their charitable work. See below for more information on their activities.

STEP TWO for MOBILE PHONES Whatever is left after the Swap Day, we'll try to find new homes for it. For mobile phones this will be through the Re:Mobile initiative. The charity which benefits from these donated items will be Sustainable Coastlines.

STEP TWO for OTHER ELECTRONICS Whatever is left will be donated to Abilities NZ who create jobs for people with disabilities extracting the re-useable components. They will also sell working electronics on Trade Me, with the income going back into their charity. At the moment, they provide jobs for over 120 disabled people and run a very high tech separation recovery operation for CRT (read OLD) TVs.

There are costs associated with responsibly recycling some electronics through this organization, which we will need to collect and which will be forwarded directly to Abilities NZ. Full rate sheet can be downloaded under the SWAP DAY information, but here are some examples:

  • CRT TV's (20" or Larger) - $20.00
  • CRT TV's (Less than 20"), CRT Computer Monitors - $10.00
  • Flat Screen TV's - $10.00
  • Flat Screen Computer Monitors - $5.00
  • Printers - $5.00
  • Photocopiers - $15.00
  • Other electrical / electronic equipment - No charge

STEP THREE Anything left over after these steps (which should be close to nothing) will be ethically disposed of through the Auckland Council's Inorganic pickup later in June. The last step in our E-Waste process.

If you'd like to help Muditanandi and Ratnavyuha with this BAM initiative, please contact one of us through the Auckland Buddhist Centre or directly. Thanks.
